CHAPTER TWELVE

“Stay there, princess. I’ll take this guy out,” Charly whispered in my ear.

It was bold of him, but I didn’t want him getting himself killed. Still, what could I do to stop him? He could fly, and I could not.

“No one move,” Ghantin commanded right as Charly started flying toward him.

The little ferret paused in midair. It looked like he was struggling to stay afloat. Were the strange vibrations in the room affecting his flight, or was Ghantin somehow controlling him? Surely it couldn’t be the latter.

I could really feel the vibrations, now. Every time Ghantin spoke, my whole body shook. And not in the fun, tingly way it had before. No, this was more like shaking in terror. He was using his sound magic to amplify the normal resonance of the room and send it into overdrive.

I hated it.

How ironic that the Mark of Mania had been found in a room with a strange sound resonance while being hunted by a sound mage. Just my kind of luck, I tell you.

“Put your hands up and back away from the Mark,” Ghantin demanded. He clapped again, and it rocked me to my core. I almost fell over from the shock of it. “And hurry. I don’t want any funny business. I just want the Mark.”

I glanced over at Val. He shot me a look that said “just go with it,” so I put up my hands and turned to face Ghantin. Before I did that, I managed to stick my finger with the lancet in my pocket to bring forth a little blood. I didn’t know what Ghantin’s plan was, but I was positive it wasn’t any good for us. I’d need magic to get us out of here in one piece.

Hopefully, Ghantin wouldn’t notice.

Ghantin eyed me with something akin to annoyance, or maybe impatience. He was still wearing that ridiculous outfit from yesterday, down to the metallic lumps in his ears. Of course, it could be a fresh, identical outfit instead. For all I knew, he had a whole closet full of garish clothes.

Still, to think that someone had purposefully sewn together more than one of those suits, though… Some people really didn’t have any taste.

“That’s good. Good. Now, both of you go over there.” Ghantin demanded, pointing toward the far corner of the room, on the opposite side from the Mark of Mania.

I sighed, but complied, all the while wondering what spell I should cast down here. Earth seemed like an obvious choice, given we were surrounded by the stuff, but also dangerous for the exact same reason. If I caused a cave-in by accident, none of us were escaping.

Maybe fire, then. Lightning would be hard this far underground, and there was no real water to speak of. Supposedly, there was a major store of water on the level beneath us, but that wouldn’t do me any good right here.

Settling on fire, I focused on building a fireball as I walked to the far corner of the room with Val and Charly.
